  • "I wanted to tell you how wonderfully your dahlias are performing in my garden, despite the fact that they have had less than perfect conditions! TEMPEST (BBFD) Introduced in 1997. A much needed color of rosy coral, these 5" flowers grow on a very compact sturdy 4' bush. This new color will make a great addition to your garden and this variety was much admired at our fall festival. A very attractive flower in arrangements! Recommended as a cut flower. Should do well in exhibition.

Hmmm, coral?
Claire Twigg (Salisbury, MD) 10/17/2018 7:31 AM
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who had some confusion with the color! To me, Tempest isn't fact, in my warm east coast garden it's more like a bright burgundy red. After a few days in the vase, I do indeed see a bit of a sunset color appearing, but it's not very close at all to the shade depicted in the photo. Still figuring out how to work with this one, color-wise. Having said that, I love the show it makes in the garden, and I wish all my dahlias were this vigorous. It's mid-October here, and Tempest is still pumping out the blooms. It's worth adding to your garden if you like warm sunset tones...just don't expect coral!
Color IS Variable
Bill Killpatrick (Lafayette, NJ) 10/28/2015 6:11 AM
In response to Linda Monroe's review.... I've grown Tempest for years. Indeed, it's not a true coral, but what color IS coral? Upon opening, it does have more rosy tones but quickly lightens bit and even takes on a frosted look as it ages. Bottom line, it's a great color and very productive.
Not a true coral

My catalog described this flower as a "much needed coral". Now it is being described as a rosy coral on the web site. To me, it looks more like a light red. I would have loved a true coral.
