Winter Dahlia Care
Winter Dahlia Care Guide

Fall has arrived in the Pacific Northwest

2021 will be a year to remember for many years to come. We had a hot summer, like never before, with temperatures reaching 117 degrees in early July. The heat slowed the dahlias down, delaying our prime blooming season by about 3 weeks. The dahlias required much more water and fertilizer this year to handle the stress. Mother nature continues to show us she is in charge.

We heard from many customers that their dahlias were late or lacked bloom due to unpredictable weather across the US and Canada. The lack of bloom is usually related to a lack of deep watering and fertilizing, which was more important than ever this year.

Our farm was open to visitors from August through September to walk the fields safely and enjoy the beauty. Many just dropped by to purchase cut dahlias, as we were open 6 days a week. We canceled our indoor display this year to keep everyone safe but added many activities to reach a wider range of interests. Each Friday in August & September we hosted a wonderful farmers market, which our visitors enjoyed. We had rotating food trucks, free concerts, painting and art classes, floral arranging classes, and dahlia care seminars to add to our visitor’s experience. The feedback has been wonderful.

Our first full hard frost has not arrived as of today, leaving all our beautiful fields sad, but not brown yet. We will allow the tubers to continue to harden off in the ground as we wait for a hard frost or November 15th to arrive before beginning our harvest.

Mark your calendars to visit next summer, August 1st through September 30th (Closed Wednesdays.)
